Cavities have been a problem for since the beginning of time. If you have teeth, you need to be concerned with cavities. Plaque is constantly forming on your teeth, and that plaque will react with the sugars in your food to wear down the enamel on your teeth. The longer the acids are present, the greater the chances of damage to your enamel and the better the chances that you will develop cavities. Naturally, sugary foods can cause damage, but it is important to remember that sugar is found in many foods, especially in carbohydrates when the break down.
Children are prone to cavities, but it is possible for older adults to get them as well. As a person ages and their gums recede, the roots of the tooth are exposed, and become vulnerable to cavities called root caries. Teeth that have fillings and crowns can also get cavities if bacteria manages to work its way under the dental work.
Fortunately, cavities are preventable. To keep tooth decay from setting up shop in your mouth, you should brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss at least once a day. If your local water supply contains fluoride, you can drink more tap water, and ask your dentist is you or your family need fluoride supplements. Healthy molars and premolars can be protected with dental sealants. Work on your menu – try eating a healthy diet with fruits, vegetables, and that is rich in calcium.
